Pariya Togonosh (パリヤ・トゴノシュ Pariya Togonoshu?) is a friend of Amir Halgal.
Appearance[]
Pariya is a teenager with long black hair, tied into several braids that reach all the way to her thighs and left hanging outside of her headdress. Her headdress is made out of an embroidered tubeteika, which she then wrapped with a long cloth that covers her back. Her outfits consist of a long plain tunic that almost reaches to her ankles, with pants that tapered towards the bottom (sharovars) and decorated with woven inkle (jiyak) on the fringe. Pariya wears a short-sleeved robe over her clothes, and it is usually much more intricately embroidered than the rest of her outfits. Because of her young age, her clothes are usually in shades of red, mixed with turquoise. For footwear, she wears boots with soft soles (makshi) which are then slipped into kavush, a pair of half-opened shoes with low heels. She wears a pair of earrings, several silver necklaces and bracelets on both of her wrists.
Personality[]
Pariya is extremely frank and has no problem of freely speaking her mind. However as she grows older and slowly reaches a marriageable age, she finds her candid personality deters potential suitors who are often shocked by her unfiltered opinions. Her habit of speaking her mind is deemed as “too cheeky” by others, and sharing a desire to get married which is common among girls of her age during the era, she tries her hardest to hide her true personality in order to appeal for potential suitors. However, her attempts to be more quiet and demure typically backfire because she often overthinks and ends up blurting the wrong thing to say anyway. This consequently creates further misunderstanding among Pariya and the other young villagers, and thus leaving Pariya with very few female friends as well.
In truth Pariya is actually a kind person and her honest words are never spoken out of malice, as shown by how she stood up for Amir when she thought the other villagers were making fun of her eventhough they were barely acquainted at that point in time. Once the other villagers overlook her awkward and stilted ways of speaking, they also notice this side of Pariya and start hanging out more with her.
Physical-wise, Pariya is incredibly energetic, possessing great strength and health and enjoys carrying out tasks that involve physical labour. She in turn hates chores that are delicate and require patience, such as sewing. She believes this side of her is unlady-like, and tries to hide it whenever she can. When it comes to anything romantic and passionate, she can get easily flustered even when it doesn’t directly involve her, as shown by how she blushes when Amir professed her love for Karluk in front of her.
Due to her father letting her play with clay when she was a child, Pariya grew up enjoying baking as she finds the consistency of dough is similar to clay. She is skilled in baking breads with beautiful designs that carry different meanings.
Plot[]
Pariya is the only child of the village’s potter and his wife. During her childhood her father often let her play with clays, a pastime that her mother attributed to her lack of skills in sewing because of how little time she spent on picking up a needle instead. When Amir moved into the village, Pariya became her first friend after helping her find a place to bake in the communal oven area. Amir, being a little absent-minded herself, completely overlooked Pariya’s awkwardness and found herself enjoying her company and they soon became close friends.
Due for a marriage, Pariya had been rejected by many potential suitors after they took offence by her frank honesty. Discouraged after being rejected many times, Pariya often had a very negative outlook on her marital prospect. When Amir and Karluk went on a trip to Karaza, her father allowed her to join them, hoping that she might have a better chance of finding a suitor in the city. As luck would have it, while she was joining a feast held in the inn where they were staying, she piqued the interest of a travelling merchant who inquired if she was interested in his son Umar. Speechless, Pariya could only respond with a blush.
Umar and his father soon came for a visit to Pariya’s house, and after learning Pariya’s father occupation, Umar’s father created an opportunity for them to know each other by asking her to show him around the pottery workplace. Pariya, wrecked with nerves on how to properly behave around Umar, accidentally pushed him hard when he suddenly came close to her. Believing she had completely blew her last chance of getting married, Pariya wallowed in self-despair while Umar on the other hand found himself attracted to her due to her sudden outburst of spirit.
The tribal war resulted in Pariya’s home being completely destroyed, including most of the embroidered cloths she had spent years preparing as part of her dowry. Having to start again from scratch, her wedding had to be delayed by another four years which further fuelled her negativity in getting married. However this misfortune turned out to be a great opportunity for her to learn sewing properly from Balkirsh, who is a master in embroidery. After knowing Umar, she even found herself much more motivated to sew in order to impress him.
After learning of the destruction happening in the village, Umar and his father came once again to help the villagers rebuilt their lost properties. Nervous by the possibility of Umar discovering her true nature and dumping her on their wedding day, Pariya developed her own elaborate ideas on what kind of girl Umar would like, even going as far as shadowing and later genuinely befriending Camora whom she deemed as the ultimate perfect bride in the village.
Unfortunately despite her best effort, Umar stumbled across her displaying her boisterous personality in full blast when she was cleaning the canal that led to the village. Pariya further wallowed in self-hatred, believing that Umar would hate her after seeing her acting so disgracefully. Ironically, Umar also believed Pariya actually hated him because she appeared to be so full of life and yet immediately became quiet and gloomy whenever he came around.
