ホーキング博士 (Hōkingu hakase Mr. Hawking?) is a childhood friend of Henry Smith.

Hawking is Henry Smith's childhood friend back in England, and a former veteran in the Crimean War of the British Army. He is later dispatched to India, now a crown colony of Britain, to provide information and record in Central Asia, amidst fear of a Russian attempt to invade India. Henry Smith's mission in Central Asia is the result of Hawking's involvement. He also has a personal residence in Ankara, then part of the Ottoman Empire, where he gives Henry the camera to record life in Central Asia.
