A Bride's Story (乙嫁語り Otoyomegatari?) is a historical romance manga by Kaoru Mori. It is serialized in a bimonthly magazine called Harta. The series began on October 14th, 2008 and is still ongoing. YEN Press currently holds the license to translate and publish the series in English.[1]
Plot[]
During the 19th century, in Turkic Central Asia, a young woman named Amir Halgal is wedded to Karluk Eihon, a boy who is eight years younger than herself. Originally from a nomadic tribe, Amir has to struggle with her new family's traditions and expectations. While adapting to her new environment, she meets various people who live in the village and finds a friend in a young girl named Pariya. Unaware to them all is the fact that Amir's family wants her returned, and they will do anything to get her back.
The story generally follows Amir's life with Karluk and his family, but other young brides and their families get some time in the spotlight as well.
Soon after Henry Smith loses his horse, he meets a distressed women whose beloved horse also went missing. Soon after their horses are found and brought back to them, the woman introduces herself as Talas. Recently widowed and living with her mother-in-law, she asks him to stay with the two of them while he waits for his guide. As the days drift by, Henry and Talas begin to form a bond with one another. Talas' mother-in-law notices this and urges Henry to take Talas as a wife, believing Talas has no future living with her. The waters become muddled even further when the uncle of Talas's late husband steps in and does everything in his power to separate the two.
Laila and Leily are two mischievous twins who have a penchant for getting in trouble. The thing they want most in life is not to laze the day away in the Aral Sea, but to find husbands. Scheme after scheme do they come up with only for them to fail hilariously, earning them a swift punishment from their mother or father. Luck turns towards their favor, however, when their father arranges a marriage between Sarmaan and Farsami, a pair of brothers who also happen to be childhood friends.
Anis has everything she could want in life; a loving husband, a healthy child with a nurse to care for him, and a splendid mansion that she can explore to her heart's content. Yet something seems to be missing from all of this: a close friend and companion, someone who she could talk to about anything. At the nurse's suggestion, the two women go to a local bathhouse. When she arrives, Anis meets Sherine, a women who is her opposite in both looks and station. Despite their differences, an unlikely friendship is formed.
After a battle devastates the village, Pariya has to start resewing her dowry over from scratch. Disheartened by the setback, she constantly worries over Umar, a young boy around her age who is shaping up to be her suitor. While work on rebuilding the town commences, Pariya attempts to mold herself into the perfect bride... with mixed results.
